Minister Khadka Highlights Millet’s Role in Strengthening Food Security
Kathmandu, August 4 – Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka, stressed the importance of promoting millet production to strengthen Nepal’s food security. Speaking at a food exhibition organized by the Nepali Cuisine Promotion Campaign on Monday, he urged the government to focus on commercializing millet cultivation.
The exhibition showcased ten different millet-based dishes, highlighting millet’s versatility and nutritional benefits.
“We can enhance food security by conserving millet, encouraging its farming, and making it part of our daily meals,” Minister Khadka said. “Relying mainly on imported food is not sustainable. Supporting local grains like millet helps Nepal become more self-reliant.”
Starting this year, the government has declared Saun 16 (according to the Nepali lunar calendar) as National Millet Day to raise awareness and promote millet farming.
While tasting the dishes, the Minister noted that millet is more than just an ingredient—it’s a vital part of Nepal’s food culture and identity, packed with excellent nutrition.
The exhibition featured various millet foods such as pancakes, pudding, muffins, biscuits, mo:mo, tempura, malpuwa, dhindo, and sel roti. Visitors enjoyed sampling these traditional delicacies.
This event was the fifth edition of “Bhojan Lipi Swad,” organized by the Nepali Cuisine Promotion Campaign in partnership with Narayani Chamena Griha at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu. International chefs Durga Khadka and Ghanashyam Kandel prepared the millet dishes.
