Monsoon to Bring Heavy Rainfall Across Much of Nepal Until Wednesday
Kathmandu, August 10 — Meteorologists say the monsoon will remain active for the next couple of days, bringing heavier rain, especially to eastern Nepal.
Govinda Jha from the Meteorological Forecasting Division said Tuesday is expected to see more rain than Sunday or Monday. “The monsoon is still active and mainly concentrated in the east,” he explained, adding that heavier rain is likely the day after tomorrow.
Since the start of the monsoon, most areas have received light to moderate rainfall, though the Terai saw a long dry spell. Rainfall has been more widespread since early August, and experts say both the amount and coverage will increase in the coming days.
Dr. Binod Pokharel of Tribhuvan University said rain will start picking up this evening, with heavy downpours likely in many areas until Wednesday. He noted that the rain will begin in the east and gradually move westward.
The monsoon trough is currently positioned north of its usual location, and meteorologists are closely monitoring the system. They say a special weather bulletin will be issued if extremely heavy rainfall is expected.
Recent radar data from Udayapur shows moderate to heavy rain in places like Hardinath and Tulsi in Dhanusha and Parwanipur in Sarlahi. Since the weather system is moving southwest, the public is advised to take precautions.
In the past 24 hours, Tulsi in Dhanusha recorded the highest rainfall at 111 mm, followed by Parwanipur with 92 mm.
For this afternoon, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast moderate rain in some hilly areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, and in parts of the hilly and Terai regions of Madhesh Province.
