Nepal and China celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations with a cultural event in Kathmandu.
Kathmandu, August 3
Nepal and China celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations on Friday with a special event held in Kathmandu. The ceremony was chaired by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and attended by former prime ministers Sher Bahadur Deuba, Jhalanath Khanal, and Baburam Bhattarai.
In his speech, PM Oli highlighted the deep-rooted friendship between the two countries, based on mutual respect, shared history, and close cultural ties. “Nepal firmly supports the One China Policy, and China has consistently respected Nepal’s sovereignty and independence,” Oli said. He described China as not just a neighbor, but also a trusted development partner.
He thanked China for its continued support in infrastructure and connectivity development in Nepal and acknowledged growing collaboration in agriculture, trade, transit, energy, health, digital technology, and climate resilience.
Referring to the recent flash flood at the Lhende stream along the Nepal–China border, Oli emphasized the need for joint efforts to protect the fragile Himalayan environment. He called for better coordination in disaster response, early warning systems, and sustainable development in the region.
Chinese Ambassador Chen Song praised Nepal’s role in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and said China is committed to deepening political trust and supporting Nepal’s development goals. “China is ready to offer its solutions to help Nepal face development challenges,” he said.
The celebration also featured cultural performances, including a dance by Chinese artists set to a Nepali song. The program opened with a musical performance titled The Himalayas, composed by Shin Moonsub, leader of the Shenzhen University International Choir. The lyrics were inspired by a poem written by Nepal’s Ambassador to China, Krishna Prasad Oli.
The performance featured artists from both countries, including Moonsub (Korea), Pang Xiaoying and Lin Jiahui (China), and Smarika Phuyal and Prashant Paudel (Nepal), showcasing the cultural bond between the two nations.
