Nepal and China mark 70 years of diplomatic relations

Kathmandu, August 1

Nepal and China are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic ties today. To mark the occasion, special events are being held in both Kathmandu and Beijing.

The relationship between the two countries has deep historical roots, dating back to the marriage of Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo and Nepali princess Bhrikuti. In the modern era, Nepal and China officially established diplomatic relations on August 1, 1955.

Since then, both countries have prioritized strengthening their bond based on the principles of Panchasheel — peaceful coexistence, mutual cooperation, respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

Former Nepali ambassador to China, Rajeshwar Acharya, noted that top leaders from both nations are committed to further deepening this relationship. He also highlighted China’s significant role in global politics as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, promoting international peace, cooperation, and a shared future.

To commemorate the occasion, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to attend a reception this evening hosted by the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, according to the PM’s private secretary.
