Nepal Chosen to Lead UN Economic and Social Council

Kathmandu, August 1 – In a significant diplomatic achievement, Nepal has been elected President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The election took place on Thursday, and Nepal assumed the position immediately after the announcement.

Nepal’s Ambassador to the UN, Lok Bahadur Thapa, called the moment “historic” and said it reflects the country’s strong commitment to multilateral cooperation. He announced that his presidency will focus on the theme “Delivering Better,” which emphasizes building stronger global partnerships and effectively implementing international goals like the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“Delivering better is not just a choice—it’s essential. It’s how we rebuild trust in multilateralism, close global gaps, uplift vulnerable communities, and turn promises into action,” Thapa said.

Alongside Nepal, representatives from Algeria, Spain, the Dominican Republic, and Armenia were elected as vice-presidents of ECOSOC for the upcoming term.
