Nepal sets new youth age range at 18–35 in updated policy.

Kathmandu, August 29 – Nepal has redefined youth as individuals aged 18 to 35 under the newly approved National Youth Policy-2082 BS.

Surendra Basnet, Executive Vice-Chairperson of the National Youth Council, said the change was needed to align with existing laws, as the Children’s Act defines anyone under 18 as a child.

The previous policy, National Youth Policy-2072 BS, defined youth as those aged 16 to 40. According to the 2021 Census, people aged 16 to 40 made up 42.56% of Nepal’s population.

While the United Nations defines youth as those aged 15–24, Basnet noted that legally, the National Youth Council Act, 2072 BS still defines youth as 16–40 until it is amended. He also mentioned that the youth policy is supposed to be updated every five years, but this revision came after a decade.
