Nepal to set up Chhayanath National Park in Mugu district

Kathmandu, Aug 29: The government has decided to create Chhayanath National Park in Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality, Mugu district. The decision was approved in today’s Cabinet meeting based on a proposal from the Ministry of Forests and Environment, said Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri.

This will be the second national park in Mugu, following the establishment of Rara National Park around 50 years ago. Chhayanath National Park is now the country’s youngest national park, bringing Nepal’s total number of national parks to 13.

The park covers about 906 square kilometers, separated from the Dolphu area of Mugum Karmarong Rural Municipality and connected to Shey-Phoksundo National Park in Dolpa. The local municipality had requested the government to designate this area as a separate conservation zone.
