Nepal’s Monsoon Highlights: 8 Must-Visit Places

Nepal’s monsoon season runs from June to August every year. It’s a wonderful time to experience nature at its best and enjoy a unique travel adventure. The rainy season brings fresh, clear views of the mountains and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Since Nepal is mostly an agricultural country, the monsoon is also the time when farmers plant crops like rice, corn, and beans. During this season, you can see beautiful green fields and terraced farms all around the country.

If you’re planning a trip to Nepal during the monsoon, here are some of the best places to visit:

1. Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu Valley is in central Nepal and the first destination for most visitors arriving by plane. It is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the famous Durbar Squares in Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur.
You’ll find rich culture, delicious food, and ancient monuments here. Walking through the wet streets of Kathmandu during the monsoon gives a magical feeling. Even near the city, you can see farmers busy planting in the fields.

2. Pokhara
Known as the “City of Lakes,” Pokhara is in western Nepal and famous for its natural beauty. It has beautiful lakes, caves, waterfalls, hills, and mountains nearby. The views of the world’s highest peaks like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu are especially clear after monsoon rains.
Popular spots include Phewa Lake, Davis Fall, Shanti Stupa, and Sarangkot. You can enjoy activities like boating, paragliding, mountain biking, and trekking. The monsoon is also rice planting season here.

3. Lumbini
Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, is a peaceful town in western Nepal and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has many monasteries built by different countries, showing Buddhist culture from around the world.
After the rain, the green surroundings make visiting temples like Maya Devi Temple and the World Peace Pagoda even more beautiful. A new international airport will soon make travel here easier.

4. Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang is a remote, desert-like region known for its unique Tibetan culture and ancient history. It was a restricted area for tourists until 1992.
Though it doesn’t get much rain, the monsoon season brings calm winds, making trekking more enjoyable. The area has stunning caves, monasteries, and beautiful mountain landscapes.

5. Annapurna Circuit
This popular trekking route takes you through diverse climates and beautiful landscapes in western Nepal. You’ll see snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, and lush forests. The trail runs through the Kali Gandaki River valley, the deepest valley in the world.
The monsoon brings some rain and wet trails, so be prepared, but the scenery is breathtaking.

6. Chitwan
Located in Nepal’s lowland Terai region, Chitwan is famous for its national park and wildlife. You can see rhinos, deer, monkeys, and many bird species during a jungle safari.
Activities include elephant rides, cultural shows by the Tharu community, and visiting the crocodile breeding center. Monsoon is a great time to see peacocks dancing and animals roaming freely.

7. Dolpa
Dolpa is Nepal’s largest district in the far west, known for its remote Himalayan landscapes. It offers amazing views of mountains like Dhaulagiri and the beautiful Phoksundo Lake.
Travel here can be challenging but rewarding. You’ll find unique cultures and traditional villages like Charka, Mukot, and Saldang.
