NHRC urges government to complete transitional justice for conflict victims

Kathmandu, Aug 30: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government to complete the transitional justice process by gaining the trust of victims of the 10-year armed conflict.

Many people who went missing during the conflict are still unaccounted for. NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, marking the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, urged the government to make public the status of these missing persons.

“The transitional justice mechanism must be fair and credible, and recommendations from NHRC should be followed. Victim families must receive justice and compensation, and those responsible must be held accountable,” the NHRC said.

It has been 19 years since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord, yet families of the disappeared still await answers. NHRC highlighted that victims’ rights to information, cultural rights, and compensation continue to be violated.

The commission has submitted 226 recommendations to the government regarding the investigation of enforced disappearances but expressed concern over the lack of action. Repeated formations of the transitional justice commission have not fully addressed the issue, NHRC added.
