Non-Communicable Diseases Increasing in Nepal
Kathmandu, August 7 – Health experts are raising concerns as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart problems, chronic lung conditions, and cancer continue to rise across Nepal.
According to Dr. Manita Pyakurel from the Nepal Non-Communicable Disease Alliance, these diseases are becoming increasingly common nationwide. Heart-related illnesses are the most widespread, making up 30% of all NCD cases, followed by chronic respiratory diseases at 10%, and cancer at 9%.
The number of deaths from NCDs in Nepal has also steadily increased over the years. In 2010, they caused 51% of all deaths in the country. That number rose to 60% in 2014, 66% in 2016, and by 2019, NCDs were responsible for over 71% of total deaths, according to the Global Burden of Disease report.
Dr. Pyakurel also mentioned that the cost of treating these diseases is rising quickly, adding more pressure to Nepal’s healthcare system.
Worldwide, non-communicable diseases claim the lives of around 4.3 million people every year.
