North Korea has warned the United States not to pressure it into giving up its nuclear weapons. They said trying to force them to do so could lead to serious consequences.
Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korea’s leader, warned the United States on Tuesday not to push North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons. This came after a White House official said that former U.S. President Donald Trump was still open to talks with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un.
Kim Yo Jong said that North Korea will strongly reject any attempt to deny its status as a nuclear weapons country. She also mentioned that while the personal relationship between her brother and Trump is “not bad,” it should not be used as a way to force North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons during any future talks.
Trump and Kim Jong Un met three times during Trump’s presidency to try to reach an agreement on North Korea’s denuclearization. However, talks fell apart in 2019 because the two sides couldn’t agree on what North Korea would get in return. Since then, North Korea has sped up its nuclear weapons program.
Kim Yo Jong referred to a recent statement by a White House official who said Trump was still willing to have talks with Kim Jong Un to achieve complete denuclearization.
She said Washington should accept North Korea as a nuclear weapons state and warned that using the personal relationship between the leaders to push for denuclearization would be seen as an insult.
Trump often talked about his “great relationship” with Kim Jong Un and hinted he might try to restart talks with North Korea’s leader.
