NTA and NTC to Expand Optical Fiber Network
KATHMANDU, AUGUST 15 – The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and Nepal Telecommunications Company Ltd (NTC) have signed an agreement to expand optical fiber connectivity in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. The project will be implemented under the Rural Telecommunications Development Fund (RTDF).
The agreement was signed on Friday in a ceremony attended by Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung and Ministry Secretary Radhika Aryal. NTA Chair Bhupendra Bhandari and NTC Acting Managing Director Sabina Maskey signed the documents on behalf of their organizations.
Secretary Aryal stressed the importance of completing the project on schedule, saying that timely execution would make it a model initiative.
NTA Chair Bhandari noted that previous RTDF optical fiber projects assigned to UTL and Smart Telecom had failed to meet obligations. The new project will last three years with an estimated cost of around Rs 2 billion. Bhandari promised timely implementation, highlighting its role in achieving the government’s ‘Digital Nepal Framework’ vision.
NTC Acting Managing Director Maskey added that the company has been working on broadband optical fiber expansion for the past nine years. The project will extend optical fiber to 23 districts in Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, installing roughly 1,900 kilometers of cable and covering 194 local levels.
