 Rajbiraj (Saptari), August 6

A man was killed in a police firing during an anti-smuggling operation near the Nepal-India border last night.

The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Lalu Yadav from Kamalpur, Rajgad Rural Municipality-2.

According to police, the incident occurred during a search operation based on a tip-off about illegal alcohol smuggling and stockpiling in the area. The operation turned violent when locals clashed with the police, throwing stones and surrounding them.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Basnet said police were forced to open fire in self-defense. Yadav was shot in the legs during the clash and died while being taken to Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital in Rajbiraj.

During the operation, police seized 80 cartons of various alcohol brands being smuggled through the border.

Just four days earlier, police had arrested two people with heroin in Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality-1.
