PM Oli: All social media platforms must follow the law

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 15 – Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that all social media platforms operating in Nepal must follow the country’s laws. Speaking at the opening session of the 'Digital Nepal Conclave 2025' organized by the ICT Foundation today, he said that social media platforms should be registered in Nepal, pay taxes, and meet other legal obligations.

“The government needs to be aware of all IT-related transactions in Nepal. Therefore, every social media platform must follow the law, including paying taxes,” Prime Minister Oli said.

He also highlighted the government’s efforts to promote information technology, which can help people earn income both domestically and internationally. Noting the rapid growth of IT, he shared that during his visit to the Pushpalal Mid-Hill Highway, he saw even elderly women in remote Rukum villages using Facebook.

The Prime Minister said Nepal has great potential for digital technology and green energy and stressed the importance of using artificial intelligence for development and prosperity. The government has recently introduced an AI policy to support this goal.

He also mentioned that over 150,000 students benefited from online education since last year, according to government data. He emphasized that information technology should be used in education and development while ensuring children are protected from the harmful effects of mobile phones.

Finally, Prime Minister Oli said that IT can help strengthen governance, reduce corruption, and involve the private sector in national development.
