Police raid Chakre Milan’s birthday party, arrest 47 people with criminal records

Kathmandu police arrested Milan Gurung, also known as Chakre Milan, on Thursday night from a hotel in the Maharajgunj area. Once a notorious gangster, Milan was taken into custody from Hotel Sambala on Bansbari Road in a joint operation by Kathmandu District Police and the Valley Crime Investigation Office.

According to police spokesperson SP Kuldeep Chand, several individuals with criminal backgrounds were arrested during the operation, but he declined to provide exact numbers.

Birthday Bash Turns into Police Operation

Earlier that day, Milan’s supporters had escorted him in a convoy of vehicles to Maharajgunj. Police sources say his birthday had been celebrated over two days, with sightings of him handing out money near the Pashupatinath Temple and spending time with popular rappers in Thamel. Reports say up to 20 cakes were cut in one spot.

Although authorities were aware of his movements, they hesitated to act initially since Milan hadn’t been linked to any recent crimes.

Arrest for Public Disturbance

Later in the evening, police received complaints that his group was causing a disturbance at the hotel. SSP Bishwo Adhikari consulted with senior officials, and Milan was arrested for creating a public nuisance. Along with him, 47 others with criminal records who had gathered to celebrate were also detained. However, no specific charges have been announced yet.

This isn’t the first time police have cracked down on gangster-related celebrations. In February, seven men were arrested for sharing TikTok videos showing them cutting cakes with swords and brandishing weapons. They were later released after the case was dropped.

Kathmandu’s History of Gang Rivalries

Milan, along with others like Deepak Manange, Raju Gorkhali, and later Ganesh Lama and Dawa Lama, rose to prominence as gang leaders after the 2006–07 People’s Movement. While some, like Manange and Lama, tried to shift into politics, Milan had previously been involved in extortion through construction tenders and loan-sharking. However, with digital tendering now in place, such criminal influence in the sector has declined.

Manange's Legal Battles

Manange is currently in Dillibazaar Jail for attacking Milan with a sword in 2004. While the District Court originally gave him two years for assault, the Patan High Court increased it to five years. The Supreme Court upheld this ruling in November 2024, leading to his re-arrest.

Police Still Keeping Watch

Authorities say many former gangsters have tried to clean up their image, especially after high-profile figures like Dinesh Adhikari (Chari) and Kumar Ghainte were killed in police encounters. But police remain vigilant. Recently, Yuvraj Gurung, alias Sanu Bhai, was arrested from a dohori sanjh venue in Thamel for allegedly starting a fight. He had also been arrested in mid-2023 for assaulting a club manager.

While some gang leaders try to maintain a low profile or enter politics, law enforcement continues to monitor their activities closely.
