Promoting Nepali Liquor Is a Top Priority, Says Industry Minister
Kathmandu, June 23 – The government has announced plans to promote and market domestic liquor as a way to boost national income.
Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Minister Damodar Bhandari shared this while responding to lawmakers' questions during a discussion on the ministry’s budget in the House of Representatives. He said that funds have been set aside specifically for promoting locally made liquor.
In the current fiscal year, the government is also focusing on mining exploration and industrial development. Minister Bhandari said Rs 500 million has been allocated for entrepreneurship development, upgrading technology, and providing subsidized loans to entrepreneurs. Special programs and funds have also been arranged to support young entrepreneurs.
The minister also shared that the government plans to move industries currently operating inside the Kathmandu Valley to designated industrial zones outside the valley. To support this move, the government will offer free land leases.
He added that legal and structural changes are being made to strengthen public-private partnerships. For example, a plan has been developed to run Dhaubadi Iron Company under this model. Work on developing the Simara and Panchkhal Special Economic Zones will also move ahead quickly.
The government is working on creating jobs through industrial infrastructure development, promoting small and medium-sized industries, setting up industrial villages, and offering skill development programs.
Minister Bhandari also mentioned that several laws, including the Economic Procedures and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2076 and the Industrial Business Act, have been introduced to ensure better implementation of industrial and employment-focused projects, and to increase capital spending.
