Rain Provides Much-Needed Relief to Drought-Stricken Madhes Province

Kathmandu, August 3

After weeks of dry weather, Madhes Province finally received much-needed rain in the past 24 hours, bringing relief to farmers and helping revive paddy cultivation. Locals welcomed the rainfall by heading to their fields and starting to transplant paddy seedlings on Sunday.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the eastern part of the country received a good amount of rainfall, while the Tarai region experienced light to moderate showers. However, the eastern Tarai got enough rain to support paddy plantation activities.

Meteorologist Binu Maharjan from the Weather Forecasting Division explained that the rain was due to a shift in the monsoon’s low-pressure belt, which moved slightly north—closer to Nepal. Although the skies remain cloudy across the country, rainfall has been scattered and inconsistent.

The highest rainfall in the region was recorded at Anarmani Birta Station in Jhapa district, which received 151.6 millimeters in the past 24 hours. Several other areas across most provinces also saw heavy rain on Sunday. Rain continues in Koshi and Madhes Provinces, with over 50 millimeters recorded at many monitoring stations nationwide.
