‘Under the Same Roof’ Celebrates the Simple Beauty of Patan’s Architecture

 Kathmandu, July 28

A new art exhibition titled Under the Same Roof opened on July 16 at Siddhartha Art Gallery in Babermahal. The joint show by Patan-based artists Subodh Bhandari and Samridhi Ratna Shakya celebrates the quiet charm of everyday architecture in the Kathmandu Valley—like old windows, doors, and walls that often go unnoticed.

French Ambassador to Nepal, Virginie Corteval, officially inaugurated the exhibition. Gallery founder Sangeeta Thapa praised the show, calling it a heartfelt portrayal of a city undergoing change.

Both artists graduated from Kathmandu University’s School of Arts in 2023. They’ve previously gained attention with exhibitions such as What Makes a City at Taragaon Next and To Make Sense of the Stillness at Gallery Mcube, and they also participated in the India Art Fair 2025.

In Under the Same Roof, Bhandari and Shakya focus on architectural details as symbols of memory and identity. “These everyday structures hold deep meaning,” said Shakya. Bhandari added, “We started with fragments and discovered a deeper emotional connection to place.”

Ambassador Corteval called the exhibition “a touching tribute to memory and creativity,” highlighting its emotional and cultural impact.

The opening included traditional touches like lighting a panas and offering khadas to the artists. More than just an exhibition, the event invited visitors to slow down and reconnect with the often-overlooked spirit of the city.
