Afghanistan Crushes Hong Kong by 94 Runs in Asia Cup Opener

ABU DHABI, September 10 – Afghanistan got off to a flying start in the Asia Cup, defeating Hong Kong by 94 runs in Group B on Tuesday, highlighted by Azmatullah Omarzai’s record-breaking T20 half-century. Omarzai smashed 53 runs off just 20 balls, including five sixes, marking Afghanistan’s fastest T20 fifty. Opening batter Sediqullah Atal also shone, scoring an unbeaten 73 off 52 balls, benefiting from three dropped catches to help Afghanistan reach 188-6.

Hong Kong, inexperienced against Afghanistan’s pace and spin attack, struggled to 94-9. Only Babar Hayat (39) and captain Yasim Murtaza (16) crossed double figures. Afghanistan’s fielding was shaky, with three dropped catches, but they made up for it with two sharp run-outs, including a spectacular diving catch by Karim Janat.

The match saw early drama, with two run-outs and a strange caught-behind dismissal of Anshy Rath, who didn’t challenge the call despite replays showing a clear gap between bat and ball. Afghanistan’s spinners—Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and AM Ghazanfar—bowled tightly, conceding only 44 runs in 10 overs and picking up key wickets.

Hong Kong’s innings never recovered after losing four wickets for just 22 runs in the first five overs. Hayat tried to spark a fightback with three sixes but was caught off fast bowler Gulbadin Naib (2-8) in the 13th over.

Afghanistan’s innings started cautiously, with Atal surviving a close call early and Rahmanullah Gurbaz dismissed cheaply for 8. By 16 overs, Afghanistan were 119-4, but Omarzai’s explosive hitting added 69 runs in the final four overs, including three consecutive sixes and a four in Ayush Sukla’s penultimate over. Omarzai eventually fell attempting another big shot, but his assault had already sealed Afghanistan’s dominance.

With this win, Afghanistan sets a strong tone in Group B, which also features Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as two teams qualify for the Super 4 stage.
