Carlos Alcaraz Defeats Jannik Sinner to Win 6th Grand Slam and Reclaim World No. 1

NEW YORK, September 8 – Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to win the U.S. Open, reclaim the world No. 1 ATP ranking, and reaffirm his dominance over the defending champion. This marked their third consecutive Grand Slam final matchup in a single season, a first in men’s tennis history.

Alcaraz, 22, joked during the trophy ceremony, “I’m seeing you more than my family,” making Sinner, 24, laugh. The win, which lasted 2 hours and 42 minutes, gives Alcaraz a 10-5 head-to-head advantage over Sinner, 6-4 in total Grand Slam titles, and a 2-1 lead in U.S. Open finals.

Sinner praised Alcaraz: “He raised his level when he had to. You were better than me. I tried my best today.” The match began half an hour late due to heightened security as former President Donald Trump attended in a sponsor’s suite. Played under a closed roof because of rain, Alcaraz dominated with speed, strength, and precision, finishing with 42 winners to Sinner’s 21. His coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, called it a “perfect” performance.

Alcaraz’s aggressive forehand and early breaks of Sinner’s serve set the tone. Despite Sinner’s record of winning 27 consecutive hard-court matches at majors, Alcaraz broke him five times. The pair have now shared the past eight Grand Slam titles, with Alcaraz and Sinner winning four each, and Novak Djokovic taking the other three.

The match featured stunning shots, including magical volleys and precise overhead smashes, much to the delight of Alcaraz’s fans, who gave standing ovations throughout. Sinner, frustrated at times, showed his disappointment with racket slams and exasperated gestures.

Alcaraz’s dominance over Sinner is clear: in the last two seasons, Sinner has a 1-7 record against Alcaraz, though he has beaten everyone else almost entirely. Their rivalry, however, continues to captivate fans worldwide, and Alcaraz described the U.S. Open as “the best tournament I have ever played.”
