England Crushes South Africa by Record 342 Runs in 3rd ODI

SOUTHAMPTON, September 7 – England pulled off a record-breaking win in one-day international cricket on Sunday, defeating South Africa by 342 runs, the biggest margin in ODI history.

After being sent in to bat, England piled up 414-5 in 50 overs with centuries from Joe Root (100) and 21-year-old Jacob Bethell (110). Captain Jos Buttler smashed an unbeaten 62 off 32 balls, while opener Jamie Smith added 62 from 48 deliveries.

In reply, South Africa collapsed to 72 all out in 20.5 overs, with pacer Jofra Archer taking 4 wickets for just 18 runs, including 4-5 in his first five overs. Skipper Temba Bavuma was injured while fielding and did not bat.

The previous record for the biggest ODI victory margin was India’s 317-run win over Sri Lanka in 2023.

South Africa had already sealed the series 2-1 after winning the first two games, but England’s huge win in the final ODI restored some pride.

The two sides will now meet in a three-match T20 series starting Wednesday in Cardiff.
