Lawmakers Call for Investigation into ‘Visit Visa’ Scam and Minister’s Bribery Case
Lawmakers have called for a thorough investigation into the recent ‘visit visa’ scam and an audio tape scandal involving a minister, demanding that those responsible be held accountable.
As soon as Speaker Devraj Ghimire opened today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, members of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) stood up and began protesting.
The Speaker then allowed RSP lawmaker Shiva Nepali to speak on behalf of his party. Nepali urged the government to act on a report published on January 25, 2022, by a team led by former Home Minister Balkrishna Khand. The report had recommended an investigation into human trafficking linked to the Department of Immigration.
RPP MP Gyan Bahadur Shahi said ministers involved in such scandals should resign, warning that the issues won’t be resolved otherwise. He stressed that the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) should take action following the release of the audio tape that allegedly links some ministers to a bribery case.
While Shahi was speaking, CPN (UML) lawmaker Sunita Baral objected to his comments about the Prime Minister and asked that they be removed from the parliamentary record.
Speaker Ghimire told the House that he has taken note of all the concerns raised by the MPs.
