Rautahat and Parsa: Teja Mukhiya, a 25-year-old farmer from Sonarniya village in Rautahat, sits alone at the edge of his rice field. The soil beneath him is cracked, and the rice he planted just ten days ago is already turning yellow. “All has dried up,” he says in Bhojpuri. “If the rain doesn’t come, what will we harvest?” Mukhiya’s worries are shared across Madhesh Province, the fertile plains along Nepal’s southern border. Once called the country’s granary, this region is now facing an unprecedented water crisis. Taps are dry, wells are empty, and fields lie barren. For the third year in a row, irregular monsoon rains and falling groundwater levels are disrupting both city and village life. Experts warn this is not just a seasonal problem—it’s a full-blown ecological emergency caused by years of neglect and mismanagement.  Baitadi, August 31 Today marks the main day of the Gaura festival, an important celebration in Sudurpaschim Province, including Baitadi, observed as Durvashtami or Athawali. Women spend the day singing traditional faag songs and offering biruda, a mix of five grains, to Goddess Gaura. Women also wear dubdhago, a sacred thread offered to the goddess, similar to the janai that men wear during annual rituals. The idols are decorated and carried from the Gaura house to the courtyard, where women sing Athawali hymns and perform rituals that tell Gaura’s story and her marriage to Lord Maheshwar. After the rituals, biruda is placed on the heads of husbands, children, and relatives as a blessing for long life and prosperity. The best way to learn? Make mistakes first.

I’ll start with a confession: I’m a first-year architecture student, and yes, I’ve cried over a CAD drawing. Full-on, dramatic tears. In the middle of the night. Over a computer screen. Everyone asks, “What’s the best way to learn?” You hear advice like, “Practice makes perfect,” “Repetition,” or “Watch a YouTube tutorial.” But here’s what I’ve actually learned: the best way to learn is to mess up—loudly, painfully, and shamelessly—and then fix it. In school or in life, mistakes aren’t just lessons—they’re the curriculum. We all learn differently. Some people are visual, some auditory, some hands-on. But one thing we all share: we learn by getting things wrong first. Think of toddlers—they don’t master walking from a tutorial. They wobble, fall, cry, and try again. Mistakes give feedback. Painful, yes, but clear and precise. Henry Ford said it best: “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” I realized this during my second studio project. I obsessed over CAD ...

PM Modi Rejects Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Request, Straining India-US Relations

On June 17, US President Donald Trump called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ask for his support for a Nobel Peace Prize nomination, claiming it was for helping end tensions between India and Pakistan. PM Modi rejected the request, saying the ceasefire was agreed directly between India and Pakistan, not because of US involvement, according to a report by The New York Times . The report suggests Modi’s refusal to support Trump’s Nobel bid strained relations between the two countries. During the call, Trump expressed pride in ending the military escalation and said Pakistan planned to nominate him for the prize, for which he had been actively campaigning. Modi clarified that the US had no role in the ceasefire. Weeks later, the US imposed 25% reciprocal tariffs on India and added another 25% penalty for India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil, making it a total of 50%. The report, written by Mujib Mashal, Tyler Pager, and Anupreeta Das, is based on interviews with more ...

Morocco Trials Floating Solar Panels to Conserve Water and Produce Electricity

Morocco, facing its worst drought in decades, has started a pilot project using floating solar panels to reduce water evaporation while generating electricity. At a large reservoir near Tangier, thousands of “floatovoltaic” panels cover the water, protecting it from the sun and producing green energy. Authorities plan to use this electricity to power the nearby Tanger Med port, and if successful, the technology could be expanded across the country. Between October 2022 and September 2023, Morocco’s water reserves lost over 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools’ worth of water every day to evaporation, worsened by temperatures averaging 1.8°C above normal. Combined with low rainfall, reservoirs nationwide are now at about one-third of their capacity. At Tangier, the reservoir loses roughly 3,000 cubic meters daily, doubling in hot summer months. The floating panels could cut evaporation by about 30 percent. The government has installed over 400 floating platforms so far, with plans t...

Nepal’s new policy now defines youth as people between 18 and 35 years old.

Kathmandu, August 29 Nepal has updated its definition of youth in the newly approved National Youth Policy-2082 BS, setting the age range at 18 to 35 years. The previous policy, National Youth Policy-2072 BS, defined youth as those aged 16 to 40. According to the 2021 Census, people in that age group made up 42.56% of Nepal’s population. While the United Nations defines youth as ages 15–24, Basnet noted that the National Youth Council Act, 2072 BS still legally defines youth as 16–40 until the law is updated. UN: Iran has executed at least 841 people so far in 2025

UN: At least 841 Executions in Iran This Year Amid Rising Human Rights Concerns The United Nations has reported that Iran has executed at least 841 people since the start of 2025, warning that the death penalty is being used as a tool of state intimidation. UN spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said the real number could be even higher due to a lack of transparency. In July alone, at least 110 people were executed—double the number from July 2024. Many of those executed were ethnic minorities, migrants, or Afghan nationals. At least 289 people were put to death for drug-related offenses in the first six months of the year. Shamdasani also criticized public executions, some reportedly carried out in front of children, which she said cause severe psychological trauma. Concerns over fair trials were highlighted, with many death sentences reportedly based on vague laws, including charges of “enmity against God.” Currently, 11 individuals in Iran face imminent execution, including six accus...

NASA data shows Mars’ mantle is filled with ancient rocky lumps

A new study shows that rocky material from giant asteroid impacts 4.5 billion years ago still lies buried deep within Mars’ mantle. The discovery was made using data from NASA’s InSight lander, which studied the planet until 2022. The impacts were so powerful that they melted large parts of Mars’ crust and mantle into magma oceans, pushing both impact debris and Martian rock deep inside the planet. These fragments, some up to four kilometers wide, remain scattered across the mantle today. Researchers say this is the first time the inside of a planet has been studied in such detail. The survival of these ancient pieces shows that Mars’ interior has changed very slowly over billions of years, unlike Earth, where similar traces have likely been erased. NASA’s InSight mission, which placed the first seismometer on Mars in 2018, recorded more than 1,300 marsquakes. This seismic data made the groundbreaking findings possible.

WHO warns of worsening health crisis in Afghanistan

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Afghanistan is heading toward a severe health crisis, with 22 million people in need of aid, hundreds of clinics shut down due to funding shortages, and mass refugee returns threatening to overwhelm the already weak system, Khaama Press reported. According to WHO, more than 22 million of Afghanistan’s 46 million people urgently need help, but only 24 percent of the required funding has been received. This shortage has forced the closure of over 420 health facilities, leaving nearly three million people without essential care. Women and children are among the hardest hit. The country is facing rising cases of malnutrition, maternal and child health complications, and outbreaks of diseases like measles and polio. Mental health issues are also increasing rapidly. Adding to the crisis, more than one million Afghans are expected to return from Pakistan and up to two million from Iran in 2025. Already, over 836,000 people have come bac...

Students reported being charged between Rs 30,000 and Rs 100,000 for NOCs, depending on the destination country. Those going to the U.S., Australia, Canada, and Europe faced the highest bribes. NOC is mandatory for students going abroad to exchange Nepali rupees for U.S. dollars. It should only be issued after verifying a student’s academic background, study plans, and the le...

Why Nepali Students Feel Lost After High School

Finishing high school should feel like an exciting milestone, but for many young people in Nepal, it’s actually the most confusing stage of their lives. Once exams are over, the big question comes up: What next? Some rush into bachelor’s programs without knowing if they’re the right fit. Others switch midway and lose valuable time. Many prepare to go abroad—not because they truly want to, but because they feel there’s no future in Nepal. What starts as uncertainty often turns into stress, anxiety, or even depression. A big reason for this confusion is the lack of career counseling in schools. Students are asked to choose between science, management, or humanities in grades 9 or 10, but most don’t understand what those choices mean for their future. Instead, they often rely on parents’ or friends’ advice, without proper guidance. The weak job market makes things worse. The World Bank says one in five young Nepalis is unemployed. Even graduates with bachelor’s or master’s degrees...

Russian troops enter another Ukrainian region as peace talks stall.

KYIV, AUGUST 28 – Russian forces have entered an eighth region of Ukraine, trying to gain more ground in their three-year conflict, a Ukrainian military official said Wednesday. Some Russian troops have moved into the villages of Novoheorhiivka and Zaporizke in eastern Dnipropetrovsk, a key industrial area next to the heavily contested Donetsk region, according to Victor Trehubov, spokesman for local Ukrainian ground forces. Russia had earlier claimed it had captured the two villages, but fighting is ongoing, and Russian troops have not yet established fortifications there, Trehubov added. Ukrainian troops are under heavy pressure trying to hold back Russia’s larger army. Analysts say there are no signs of a collapse in Ukraine’s defenses, and Russia has been unable to take major towns or cities. However, its slow advance through rural areas keeps Ukraine under constant pressure. The front line stretches roughly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) across eastern and southeastern Ukraine, ...

Trump’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods over Russian oil purchases come into effect.

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 28 – The U.S. has imposed steep tariffs on a range of Indian products, raising concerns about a major blow to India’s exports in its largest overseas market. President Donald Trump had initially set a 25% tariff, but an executive order earlier this month added another 25% because of India’s purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total U.S. tariffs to 50%. The Indian government estimates these tariffs could affect $48.2 billion in exports. Officials warn that the duties may make exports to the U.S. unprofitable, potentially leading to job losses and slower economic growth. India–U.S. trade has grown in recent years, but disputes over market access and domestic political pressures leave it vulnerable. Labor-intensive sectors such as textiles, gems and jewelry, leather goods, food, and automobiles are expected to be hit the hardest, according to the Global Trade Research Initiative. “The new tariff regime is a strategic shock that could wipe out India’s long-standin...
